the weekend was perfect,
in every way that a weekend can be perfect.
friday night, ethan and i made pasta, watched a bunch of of it's always sunny, and i fell asleep early after one too many "skinny girl" margaritas. :)
saturday morning, we decided we wanted to go on a little adventure. i remembered a little wine town a woman at work had told me about. so we jumped on the highway for 70 miles southeast before reaching the little town of temecula.
as soon as we pulled off the highway and onto its streets, my heart soared for joy. that little town set in between gorgeous green hills was everything i could've wanted and more. traffic was nearly nonexistent and the cars that were on the road made their way slowly to each of their different destinations. the downtown was maybe quarter of a mile long, lined with mom-and-pop business and American flags hanging from every street lamp. i couldn't help but laugh when ethan looked at me and asked "are you sure we're still in california?" it certainly did not feel like it and that can only be a good thing.
we parked (easiest parking i've had since i moved down to southern california!) and walked across the street to the temecula museum where the residents were having a little flea market. there was no rush there; no crowds. people mingled to chat with each other, stopped to sip their coffee and "oooo" and "ahhhh" at babies in strollers. the volunteers at the museum waved to us from their chairs out front. ohhh, my heart nearly longed to explode at that moment. everything i've done in the past year has involved rushing, pushing past strangers and trying not to get sucked into crowds. even ethan had to agree that the slow pace and simple people were a bit overwhelming in a deliciously wonderful kind of way.
we walked the flea market, looking at everything from bumper stickers to vintage barbie dolls. i ended up with a gorgeous scarf, two movies and a necklace for my best friend, all under $15. :)
after leaving the flea market, we walked a block or 2 to the little downtown area where we spent the next couple hours holding hands, exploring stores, and dog/people-watching. there were some darling little boutiques, thrift shops, and a store full of lavender products.
we held kittens that someone was giving away and played with puppies at a little pet shop. for lunch, we stopped at a little barbecue joint that overlooked the downtown and watched all the cool motorcyles that roared through the streets.
my favorite, FAVORITE part of the day, though, was the old town root beer shop.
ethan and i probably spent 30 minutes in there, perusing all the different kinds of root beer and chatting with the sweet old man who owned the place and winked at every person who walked through the door.
we ended up with an awesome 10 case of root beer sampler and a couple other root beers/old-fashioned sodas we wanted to try.
we spent the rest of the weekend trying the different kinds we had bought and i am convinced they put some kind of addictive drug in those bottles because my dreams are now somewhat like little root beer bottles dancing around my head.
my second favorite part of the day was after the root beer and before leaving. we sat on a bench in the shade and listened to a nearby band play the soundtrack to the evening falling upon us and that little town.
if sleepiness didn't quickly descend upon us, ethan probably would've had to drag me kicking and screaming out of there. i never wanted to leave, but as the sun began to set behind the hills, we braved the traffic back to orange county.
the rest of the evening we spent trying the root beer, eating our leftover pasta and watching true grit and the voyage of the dawn treader. (i am not much for westerns, but true grit was awesome! and i love the chronicles of narnia, but i'm forced to admit that this one was a bit cheesy to me.)
sunday came. i slept in late. ethan and i talked for hours. ordered pizza around 3. i made a pie.
{thumbs up was a theme this weekend.}
and then we watched hitch.
that was the entire day. doing almost nothing. it was beautiful and wonderful and i never wanted it to end.
the past month has been a whirlwind--between seaworld and my birthday, visiting family and helping out with weddings--and this weekend was the exact dose of adventure and relaxation that i needed to rejuvenate and be assured that summer has just begun. great things are yet to come. :)
