this weekend was a weekend that made me love weekends--the type of weekend that made me feel like i actually HAD a weekend and in turn, gave me hope for the week ahead.
ethan was in training all saturday and sunday, which i handled better than i thought i would. i haven’t had a weekend to myself in what feels like quite some time, so in a small way, i was relieved and had plans to make the best of it.
and oh boy, i certainly did.
saturday.
-slept in until 10am. i honestly don’t think i have slept in past 7:30-8 in months, so it was glorious to roll over and look at the clock and see that, already, i was making the most out of my saturday.
-made a Target run for some coffee grounds (starbucks columbia—be still my heart) and creamer (coffeemate natural bliss sweet pea—for the coffee lovers out there, you must try it. it is divine.)
-after coming home and brewing a pot, i moved my coffee mug from room to room with me while i cleaned. 3 loads in the laundry, scrubbing dishes, vacuuming the floor, making the bed…all the while the sunlight poured in through all the windows. it was glorious.
-cleaned out my email inbox. halle-freakin-lujah. i had emails in there back from 2010. 2010, people. i am horribly lacking when it comes to things in technology. but i finally organized all the things i wanted, deleted the things i didn’t, and replied to a great number of emails from my blogger friends—some that have been sitting in there since may. i have been harboring some guilt about being so behind, but life happens and i figured, better late than never.
-got my tan on. i laid in the backyard for a couple hours and read the magician’s nephew while trying to soak up some rays. i swear, nothing is more peaceful to me than laying in the grass with a good book while the sun pours down on you. it can be difficult to pull myself away at those moments. not to mention that i’ve never read the the magician’s nephew before and i swear, if I had known it was so magical, i would’ve read this book a long time ago. i’m already halfway through it which is the fastest i’ve gotten through a book since my car accident over 4 years ago. i think it’s something about Narnia.
-used bookstore shopping with no luck. that’s beside the point, though. it was lovely to browse the countless aisles and breathe in the air between the pages of some very old books. a soothing experience, if nothing else.
-grocery shopping. something so satisfying about a refrigerator full of fresh fruits and all kinds of delicious things to put in my body.
-watched beauty and the beast. my favorite Disney movie. i haven’t watched it in years and i forgot how wonderful it was. oh man, at the end when the beast dies and then turns back into the prince? bust out the kleenex, baby--i was a basket case. i secretly prayed to myself that i could hold it together better when i’m watching Disney classics with children of my own.
-knitting. i am a slow knitter, but i got quite a bit of my scarf done while watching the movie.
sunday.
-after a long shower, some coffee and cereal, i called my best friend and we talked for 5 and a half hours. yes, you read that right: 5 AND A HALF. but i don’t think we’ve really talked since i left sacramento after the 4th, so i felt the time was justified. ;) we had a lot to catch up on and some encouraging to do with each other. we also talked about the possible planning of some big trips (cruise to mexico, las vegas, the grand canyon, new york city, anyone?) which, if any, of those trips will happen is unknown, but it’s still fun to dream and look at plane tickets and hotel prices online together.
-laid out in my backyard again for another hour or two. i feel like i’m getting some good color and i’m making my way quickly through my book. :) i plan to continue my afternoon ritual after work the rest of this week.
-killed the nastiest bug known to mankind.
okay, that might be an exaggeration, but it was the nastiest bug i have ever seen and probably the nastiest thing i have ever done.
saturday, when i was laying out, this gigantic metallic green bug kept dive-bombing me. every couple minutes, i would hear him buzz by my head and if i would try to shoo him away, he would just come at me more. sick. i finally had to go inside because i could no longer concentrate on my book.

then, yesterday, i was laying out on the cement, just minding my own business, when i heard a loud buzzing noise by my head. and when I looked to my left there was

this nasty guy—the same. exact. bug– was crawling towards my face. NO. JOKE.
naturally, i screamed, but this time, i had come prepared by bringing a coloring book out with me. i threw the coloring book over the bug and freaked out for a few minutes because i was afraid. then, he started crawling out from under the book and no way was i about to let him walk free. so i took a planter and smashed him. and oh god, i heard and FELT the crunch underneath the planter. the worst part? guts everywhere. white guts with red stuff in between them.
SICK.
SICK SICK SICK.
i swear, i almost threw up.
i swear, i almost threw up.
oh, but it gets even better. my best friend was wondering what kind of bug could make me hyperventilate like that, so she asked me to take a picture and send it to her. and when i got my phone close enough to get the full effect, i could see he was still moving his little nasty bug pincers. he was still alive! blood and guts everywhere and he was still alive.
i wanted to die.
but i didn’t. in one swift move, i removed the coloring book all the while smashing the planter again on top of his big fat head. and, praise the Lord, there was no crunch this time.

anyways, that was my God-awful story for the weekend. i just had to share with everyone because i kept having nightmares about it last night and i needed to lighten the load ;) bet you’re glad you read my blog now, aren’t you?
ugh. sick.
-aaaaanyways. after that nasty incident, i did get to lay out and read my book in peace.
-the rest of the evening? i knitted. made carne asada for dinner and watched the sisterhood of the traveling pants 2.
yes, it was a great weekend. i can only hope it’s the foretelling of a lovely week to come.
i think it is. :)
